DUI charged: Crawford County man crashes in Jasper County

JASPER CO., Ill. – Two Crawford County residents are fortunate to have been only injured in a crash early this morning near Ste. Marie, with the driver of the pickup being cited for DUI and speed infractions.

Illinois State Police in District 12 Effingham report that the single-vehicle crash happened early this morning (Friday, August 23), at 2:22 a.m.

ISP said that preliminary investigative details indicate a white 2004 Ford pickup being driven by Payton Z. Stifle, 24 of Robinson was traveling eastbound on E. 400th Ave., approximately 1640 feet west of 2125th St. near the village of Ste. Marie at a high rate of speed. With Stifle was passenger Blake A. Bell, 22 of Oblong.

The pickup struck a steep slope in the roadway, skidded out of control, and ran off the roadway to the left (north). The vehicle then overturned several times into the tree line. 

The pickup came to final rest in the tree line facing westbound overturned on its driver’s side.

Both Stifle and Bell were transported to Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney with unspecified injuries.

Stifle was issued a citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
