EFFINGHAM CO., Ill. – A woman from Michigan was the single casualty in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 this afternoon.

Illinois State Police in District 12 Effingham report that the accident happened at 1:25 p.m. today (Thursday, August 22).

Preliminary investigative details indicate traffic on I-70 eastbound was slowed or stopped from milepost 104 to milepost 101 due to back up while a prior accident scene was being removed.

A black 2017 Freightliner pulling a white 2015 Stoughton semi-trailer being operated by Jeffrey W. Schlieve, 53, of Bristow, Oklahoma, was traveling eastbound on I-70 at milepost 101 slowing and coming to a stop.

A white 2004 Chevrolet pickup pulling a white 2003 Everest camper and being operated by David A. Kallweit, 65 of Lansing, Michigan, was traveling behind the Freightliner. The Chevy/camper combo failed to stop and struck the rear of the semi-trailer.

The passenger in the Chevy pickup, Leanne M. Kallweit, 57 of Lansing, was transported by Abbot Ambulance to Effingham’s St. Anthony’s Hospital for treatment.

David Kallweit was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
