MATTOON SHOOTING: Husband shot wife, then himself

Posted by on Wednesday, August 14th, 2019 @ 10:23 pm.

MATTOON, Ill. - Authorities have confirmed that the murder-suicide that happened in Mattoon this past weekend was perpetrated by the husband of the deceased couple.

Joseph McFarland, 37, is reported to have shot his wife Rachel McFarland (formerly Sigrist), 36, then killed himself with a single gunshot to the head. The pistol used, a 9mm, was found nearby.

While Mr. McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene, Mrs. McFarland was not pronounced deceased until after she had been transported from the scene to a local hospital.

Published reports indicate that the two were having marital issues. Unfortunately, some reports seem to indicate that their 10-year-old son was in the home at the time of the shooting. Neighbors, however, were the ones who called authorities after they heard gunshots, according to official reports.

The little boy is the subject of fundraisers currently; Mattoon Police Officers have established a ‘Community Care Fund’ in the boy's name (Colton McFarland) at the 1st Mid Bank and Trust in Mattoon. Funds can be donated at that bank, or at the Mattoon Police Department at 1710 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, Ill., 61938. All funds raised will go towards the boy's education.
