Teens pose as creepers in van offering candy to kids in attempt to be “funny”; law enforcement, parents, not amused

ENFIELD, Ill. - A Thursday morning incident involving four teens who said they thought it would be funny to offer young kids some "candy and a ride" learned the hard way that in today's climate of pervs all over the place, the situation was anything BUT.

Sheriff Doug Maier has issued a press release on just what happened.

Maier said that at 11:27 a.m. yesterday (Thursday, July 18), the White County Sheriff's Office was advised of a possible attempted child abduction in the village of Enfield.

Maier and Sgt. Craig Poole responded to the situation, arriving at a residence on the 100 block of Mulberry Street in the village a couple of minutes later.

Two boys, ages 7 and 9, advised that a red van/SUV had pulled up beside them while they were walking, and the occupants offered them candy. The occupants also asked the boys if they needed a ride. The boys said they cannot take candy from strangers and then the vehicle left. The boys said there was no attempt to force them into the vehicle. They described the occupants as four male subjects, and that they all appeared to be teenagers.

The Sheriff's Office received information about the owner of the vehicle and were able to determine the four subjects inside: Four juvenile males ages 14 to 16.

All four juveniles and their parents came to the sheriff's office to be interviewed. All four admitted that they were the ones who talked to the boys. The driver was the only one who spoke to the boys; he said that he was the one who offered candy, and admitted that he thought the situation would be "funny" but "now understands the seriousness of the situation and the turmoil that the incident has caused."

The report was to be forwarded to White County State's Attorney Denton Aud to determine if criminal charges are going to be filed.
