Mississippi man killed in single-vehicle overcorrection crash on I-57

MARION CO., Ill. – A man from Mississippi lost his life and two children were transported to a St. Louis hospital following yet another overcorrection crash, this one in Marion County late Tuesday morning.

Illinois State Police in District 12 Effingham report that the wreck occurred in the southbound lane of Interstate 57 in Marion County at 11:31 a.m. yesterday morning, Tuesday, July 9.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that a blue 2008 Chevrolet being driven by Dary L. Barnes, 49, of Ripley, Mississippi, was southbound on I-57 just south of milepost 115 when it went off the left side of the roadway into the median and overcorrected back on to the roadway to the right. 

Barnes lost control of the vehicle, which overturned then came to rest in the median. 

A passenger, Randy Barnes, 44 and also of Ripley, was pronounced deceased on scene. Two passengers, a 13-year-old male and a 13-year-old female, both also of Ripley, were transported by helicopter to St. John’s and Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.

Dary Barnes was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and Improper Lane Usage.
