MASSAC CO., Ill. - While the names of the deceased haven't been released pending notification of family, a number of those involved in the chain-reaction crash Sunday in Massac County have been named, and along with one of the fatalities, several involved are from southern Illinois.

Illinois State Police in District 22 Ullin report that the fatal eight-vehicle crash, which resulted from a semi striking a line of vehicles at 12:40 Sunday afternoon, June 29, happened at milepost 37 on Interstate 24 in Massac County, Illinois.

ISP said that seven vehicles were stopped in traffic at that location when a semi being operated by Rickey Warren, 57 of Holly Springs, Mississippi, coming up behind the stopped traffic, failed to reduce speed and struck the back of the line, causing the chain reaction with the seven stopped vehicles, among which were five cars or SUVs, a pickup truck and a semi.

Killed in the crash were a 56-year-old woman from Vandalia who was the driver in her vehicle; a 71-year-old man from Bellevue, Nebraska, also the driver of his vehicle; and a 75-year-old female passenger also from Bellevue, likely the passenger of the Bellevue driver's vehicle.

Besides the three fatalities, ISP reports that six of the 13 people in total involved in the wreck were transported to area hospitals with injuries, and four others indicated they had no injuries. Among that number was a vehicle being driven by a Granite City man, Chase Taylor, 36, with passenger Nicole Taylor and two children; the rest are reportedly from out-of-state.

The accident remains under investigation. When identities are released, we'll update this report. Be watching.
