Elderly couple’s vehicle falls into embankment after missing rest area exit

CLARK CO.., Ill. - An elderly driver and his wife suffered minor injuries after a single-vehicle crash at a rest area off Interstate 70 last night.

Illinois State Police confirm that the incident occurred at just before 8 p.m. last night, Sunday, June 9.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that a silver 2007 Toyota Rav4 being driven by Jonas B. King, 81, of Goshen, Ind., was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 at milepost 149 entering the Cumberland Rest Area.With King was passenger Esther King, 78, also of Goshen.

ISP said Goshen failed to reduce speed at the first left curve in the rest area and continued straight off of the pavement down an embankment. The Rav4 fell approximately 100 feet down the embankment and struck a creek embankment, coming to final rest in the creek facing westbound.

The Goshens were transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for minor injuries. There were no citations issued.
