EFFINGHAM CO., Ill. - A collision happening early this morning involved a prisoner transport van and a rented vehicle carrying seven family members, Illinois State Police report.

The crash occurred on I-70 westbound milepost 80, two miles west of the village of Altamont in Effingham County.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that the rental vehicle, a black 2018 Toyota 4Runner being driven by Aireol A. Orman, 28, of Buffalo, New York, was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 at milepost 80 in the left lane at approximately 12:33 a.m. early this morning (Saturday, May 18).

A black 2013 Ford Van owned by Security Transport Services, in Kansas, driven by Cheryl L. Walker, 37, of Homestead, Florida, rear-ended the 4Runner, causing front end damage to the transport van and rear end damage to the 4Runner.

The transport van contained two guards and four prisoners. Only five individuals were named, however, as passengers, with no distinction between guard or prisoner. They are: Randal L. Johnson, 33, Homestead, Fla.; Alberto Lorenzo-Sanchez, 28, Olath, Kansas; Peter M. Straub, 60, Tucson, Arizona; Mason L. Hyde, 26, Ft. Collins, Colorado; and Noel Garcia, 27, Lawrence, Kansas.

Aforementioned individuals were treated on scene for minor injuries and released.

In the rental vehicle were: Dement M. Ormond, 67; Deah L. Ormond, 27; a 10-, 6- and 5-year-old, all males; and a 4-year-old female, all from Buffalo. Dement and Deah Ormond and the 10-year-old were transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital by Abbot Emergency Medical Services. The four remaining passengers self-transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital for examination and treatment and were released.

The collision was witnessed by another motorist who remained on scene and assisted first responders. The Altamont Fire Protection District responded to the scene and assisted with traffic control.

The transport van driver was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and Following too Closely; the rental vehicle driver was cited for Improper Use of Left Lane.
