CUMBERLAND CO., Ill. – A two-vehicle crash earlier this afternoon marked the third interstate accident of the day (Wednesday, April 17), and this is one that ISP is attributing to DUI.

Illinois State Police said the third one occurred on Interstate 70 eastbound at milepost 106, a mile east of the village of Montrose at 12:23 p.m.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that a white 2003 Acura being driven by Bonnie A. Swofford, 39, of Neoga, was traveling eastbound on I-70 at mile post 106 in Cumberland County when it left the north side of the roadway.

The Acura over-corrected, spinning out of control entering the roadway, and was struck by a blue 2015 Peterbilt truck being driven by Robert L. Stonebarger, 34, of Anderson, Ind., who was traveling eastbound at the same location.

The Acura came to a rest in the median. The truck came to rest on the shoulder.

Swofford and passengers Verrin A. Mull, 45 of Effingham, and Christopher L. Flora, 44 of Teutopolis were taken to either Carle Clinic or St. Anthony’s. Stonebarger was uninjured.

Swofford was cited for Expired Driver’s License, Expired Registration, Illegal Transportation of Open Alcohol, Improper Lane Usage and DUI.
