MARION, Ill. - Marion Police Department has issued information regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred this past weekend in town.

MPD stated formally that on Friday, April 5, officers with the Marion Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a possible DUI vehicle that was reportedly driving recklessly for several miles on Interstate 57.

As officers attempted to stop the vehicle in Marion, the driver, identified as Ethan Adams, 28 of Sikeston, Missouri, refused to stop for officers and actively evaded police through Marion streets.

Adams swerved at oncoming motorists, drove in opposite lanes of traffic, and traveled both on and off the roadway to flee police. Adams eventually pulled onto the Huck’s parking lot on East DeYoung Street in Marion and stopped his vehicle. Marion officers exited their squad cars and approached the vehicle. Adams sped off again, ramming a squad car and hitting a Marion officer with his vehicle.

As Adams vehicle struck the officer and the squad car, the officer discharged his duty weapon at the suspect vehicle, striking Adams at least once. Adams fled the scene and continued to evade officers for several more miles. The vehicle eventually became disabled, drove off the roadway, and crashed into a business property on North Market Street.

Adams was taken into custody and transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center. He was later flown to a trauma center for further medical treatment. The Marion officer was treated for injuries sustained from being struck by the suspect vehicle. Both Adams and the officer are expected to recover.

Adams was charged with Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding Police, and multiple other traffic charges related to this incident.

The Illinois State Police conducts all official investigations into officer-involved shooting incidents throughout the state and their investigation into this incident remains ongoing at this time.
