High winds blow truck/semi off the interstate in White County

WHITE CO., Ill. - A semi driver from Florida probably didn't expect the high winds he encountered while on the interstate in White County earlier this morning, but with the weird weather front moving through the area, that's exactly what happened.

Illinois State Police in District 19 Carmi said the single-vehicle incident occurred this morning (Thursday, February 7) at 10:15 a.m.

According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, the driver of a white 2016 Freightliner truck tractor/semi-trailer combination, Ronald C. Cipriano, 57, of Miami Beach, was westbound on I-64 approaching milepost 121 1⁄2, when strong winds lifted the empty semi-trailer, causing both the truck tractor and semi-trailer to overturn.

The vehicles came to rest on I-64, blocking both westbound lanes of traffic for several hours. Cipriano did not report any injuries as a result of the crash.

An ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer (CVEO) was assigned to the crash investigation. In addition, the White County Sheriff’s Department, Grayville Police Department, Little Wabash Fire Protection District, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and Rick’s Towing assisted ISP District 19 at the crash scene.
