Ashley Sanders

GIBSON CO., Ind. - The young woman whose drinking and driving claimed the lives of two young Indiana men will be spending the better part of the next quarter-century thinking about it behind bars.

Ashley Sanders, 25 of Patoka, Ind., received her sentence Wednesday, January 30, after having entered her guilty plea just a couple of weeks ago in the deadly crash that occurred in September 2018. Sanders was driving while intoxicated and speeding when she crashed into a vehicle on Old U.S. 41, causing the deaths of Trevor Watt, 19 of Princeton, and James Gasaway, 20 of Haubstadt.

Sanders had initially pled not guilty in Gibson County Superior Court in Princeton, but a few weeks ago (December 28, 2018), she changed that to guilty, likely to avoid getting slammed by a jury.

The guilty pleas are to two counts of Causing Death When Operating a Motor Vehicle with an ACE of .15 or More, and Driving too Fast for Conditions. Dismissed were Causing Death When Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Schedule 1 or 2 Controlled Substance (two counts, one meth and one cannabis), Driving Left of Center, Failure to Use Safety Belt, Improper Use of Center Lane on Roadway with 3 or More Lanes/Driving in Center Lane, and Failure to Obey Signs and Markings While Driving a Vehicle.

For her plea, she received 24 years in prison.

On Monday of this week (Jan. 28) in advance of the plea hearing, one Brandon C. Sanders (no relationship available) of Patoka, along with Ashley Sanders, filed a Petition for Emergency/Temporary Guardianship of a minor child of Sanders'.
