MOTORCYCLIST KILLED IN REAR-END COLLISION, CUMBERLAND COUNTY

CUMBERLAND CO., Ill. - A truck-v-motorcycle accident claimed the life of a man from Georgia early this morning, according to Illinois State Police.

ISP said that the accident occurred on Interstate 57 in the northbound lane at milepost 175 in Cumberland County, approximately 5 miles south of Neoga.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that at 1:54 a.m. this morning (Tuesday, June 12), a 2014 Peterbilt semi truck-tractor being driven by James T. McMorris, 41, of Zachary, Louisiana, was traveling northbound directly behind a 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle being driven by George P. Varvitsiotes, 56, of Newnan, Georgia.

At milepost 175, the Peterbilt struck the rear end of the motorcycle, causing both units to leave the roadway.

Varvitsiotes was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cumberland County Coroner.
