WHITE CO., Ill. - A young man charged with Child Pornography in White County - and which crime was featured in the issue that just went on stands yesterday - has entered an open plea of guilty today in White County Circuit Court.

Shortly after being arrested for burglary and some drug-related offenses on April 23, 2018, information was received by the Carmi Police Department and used to obtain a search warrant of the phone of Jedidiah M. Johnson, 25, of Carmi.

During the search of the phone, videos of child pornography were found.

Over the last couple of weeks, negotiations have taken place that resulted in the filing of charges and an open plea of guilty by Johnson to five (5) separate counts of child pornography. Each offense is a separate Class 1 felony because the children in each video are under the age of 13 and the defendant was previously convicted of Aggravated Child Pornography in 2011.

On each offense, Johnson is looking at a sentencing range of 4-15 years; however, because the children in each video are under the age of 13, the sentence on each count must be served consecutively to one another. Consequently, Johnson is looking at a sentencing range of 20-75 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with a mandatory supervised release (MSR, formerly known as parole) period of between 3 years and natural life. Johnson is represented by Public Defender Rhonda Blades.

State’s Attorney Denton Aud is representing the State. Judge Mark Stanley is the judge that accepted the open plea of guilty to the five (5) counts of child pornography and will therefore be the sentencing judge. Judge Stanley ordered Johnson to undergo a sex offender evaluation pursuant to statute and set the sentencing hearing for July 10 at 1:00 p.m.

“Recognizing this as National Police Week, I again cannot laud enough the efforts of our local law enforcement in White County," Aud said. "In this case, the Carmi Police Department did an excellent job of following instincts and leads provided by the public to obtain the evidence for the successful prosecution of someone with a history of possessing child pornography again engaging in the seriously horrific offense of being in possession of child pornography. The defendant is looking at receiving a lengthy prison sentence because of good police work and assistance from the public.”
