Saline County honors National Police Week

SALINE CO., Ill. - The week of May 13th-through 19th is National Police Week. And during that week, May 15th is designated as National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

National Police Week was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. The designation of May 15th pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

In Saline County eight men have lost their lives while doing the job as peace officers.

- Deputy Sheriff Royce E. Cline, 45 was shot and killed in August 1925 while with other officers attempted to raid an illegal still.

- Deputy Sheriff Henry G. Healy, 33 drowned in February 1937 while attempting to provide food and medicine to a family stranded by a flood.

- Deputy Sheriff James E. Tolbert, 42, drowned in February 1937 while attempting to provide food and medicine to a family stranded by a flood

- Deputy Sheriff Harrison Dunning, 62, was killed in a car crash in January 1952 while transporting prisoners near Champaign.

- Deputy Fred McClanahan, 37, died of a gunshot wound in November 1932 while providing security at the African Methodist Episcospal. 

- Chief of Police Daniel Law, 31, was shot in July 1932, while attempting to take three men into custody.

- Trooper Grady Sutton, 45 was shot in July 1932, while attempting to take three men into custody with Chief Law.

- Trooper Albert Brokmyer, 48, was shot in November 1938 while attempting to arrest a man for armed robbery.
