ENFIELD: ATV overturn accident gets driver cited for DUI

ENFIELD, Ill. - An ATV accident Saturday night got an Enfield man hemmed up on a DUI and a summary suspension of his license after he refused a breathalyzer test.

White County sheriff's officials say dispatch received a call at approximately 10:07 p.m. Saturday, March 10, reporting a traffic crash on Highway 1 at County Road 800 East (about midway between Carmi and Brownsville). The caller reported a side-by-side ATV was turned over on its side and the driver's leg was caught underneath. Multiple deputies and White County Ambulance Service responded to the scene, but before they arrived the caller had advised that the driver had been cleared from the vehicle...and seemed intoxicated.

When authorities arrived, they found Scottie Hosick, 56 of Enfield, covered in mud and standing beside the overturned ATV, which was also covered in mud. When asked what happened, Hosick said that he was coming off CR 800E and a deer ran across the roadway, so he maneuvered to dodge the deer, which action caused him to lose control and overturn.

During this convo, authorities noticed what they believed to be a "strong odor of alcohol" coming from Hosick, which along with his slurred speech, caused them to believe he had been operating the vehicle intoxicated. Hosick refused emergency medical services at that point, and deputies questioned him further about his travels, to which Hosick said only that he'd been riding around in the country and was now headed home, indicating contradictory information from what he'd explained already about his direction of travel. When asked if he'd ben drinking, Hosick advised that he'd been "drinking a few while riding around."

Hosick then refused a portable breathalyzer test, and was arrested for DUI. He also refused a breath sample at the jail (twice), and so was issued citations for Improper Operation of an ATV on the Roadway and DUI. Hosick was released at that time.
