GRAYVILLE, Ill. - The copper thieves continue to risk life and limb in an effort to get the metal from cell towers in the area, with the latest having been reported on Friday morning in rural White County outside the Grayville area.

White County sheriff's reports indicate that on Friday, March 9, at approximately 9:36 a.m. Deputy Randy Graves was called to the location of a tower on 1475E at 2500N in Grayville. He spoke with AT&T employee Jason Oliver who advised that the night before (Thursday, March 8), someone had entered the property to commit a theft and criminal damage to property, which is a tower enclosed by a fenced-in area, owned by SBA Towers and containing AT&T equipment.

Graves noted in his report that the theft on the previous night would make the third time in the past month this tower site had been hit. This time, Graves reported, the person went to the meter at the roadway as always. However, this time the wire had been replaced with aluminum wire instead of copper, so the person didn't take this wiring as in the past. Instead, they cut the wire and busted the conduit owned by SBA. The individual then went inside the fenced-in area and cut the meter wiring for SBA, the dragged the wire out of the meter at the roadway.

A screwdriver was left at the scene, and this was placed into evidence to submit for DNA.

Then at 11:50 a.m., Oliver called Graves to a location on 2537N at 2060E in Grayville that same day in reference to someone entering upon that property to commit a theft and criminal damage to property, this being another location of a tower in an enclosed fenced area, the tower being owned by SBA Towers, where AT&T has their equipment.

Graves reported that someone had entered the fenced-in area by means of cutting the wire fence, then cutting the wiring at the control panel inside the fence. The individual then cut the wiring outside of the fence at the pole, busting the conduit to gain access to the wiring.

Graves noted in his report that the individual took three wires of 3/0 copper wire approximately 40 feet in length.

If anyone has any information to submit regarding these and/or previous thefts, please call the White County Sheriff's Office at 618-382-5321.
