ICY INTERSTATE: Folks from Memphis are latest victims of road conditions

FAYETTE CO., Ill. - Three individuals from Memphis, Tennessee, were shaken up very early Sunday morning after the driver lost control of their vehicle on icy I-57.

Illinois State Police said the single-vehicle accident occurred at 3:38 a.m. Sunday, February 11, two miles north of Farina in Fayette County.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that Sandra P. Soto, 42, driving a 2003 GMC Yukon XL, was northbound on 57 at milepost 137.5 just north of Farina when she passed an IDOT salt truck in the left passing lane.

When returning to the driving (right) lane, Soto lost control of the vehicle due to ice. This caused the Yukon to slide sideways and travel off the road to the right. The Yukon overturned and ended up on the driver's side.

Soto, as well as two passengers, Cristhian Antonio Ruiz Gordillo and Brenda Jazmin Garcia Martinez, both age 30 and both also of Memphis, were transported by Kinmundy Ambulance to Salem Township Hospital with unspecified injuries.

Soto was subsequently cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and No Valid Insurance.
