WHITE CO., Ill. - Harrisburg officials found themselves working with White county authorities yesterday on a stolen vehicle issue, with one in custody over it.

White County Sheriff Doug Maier said that a deputy was contacted yesterday morning (Thursday, February 8) about a vehicle located in Harrisburg abandoned, and with ID-ing information coming back to Bob and Connie Johnson of a rural Carmi address.

A deputy attempted to contact the Johnsons at their address on County Road 1285N, but no one came to the door.

In the meantime, reports show that an Austin L.A. Cartmill, 18, of a residence on the 700 block of sixth Street in Carmi, came to the Harrisburg PD wanting a ride back to his hometown.

The responding deputy (Sgt. Byrd Huber) was able to make contact with Bob Johnson, who stated that the vehicle, a beige 2014 GMC Acadia, had been stolen. Johnson advised that he'd driven his wife to church Thursday, and had left the keys in the car. Moulding on one of the doors had been damaged due to the ice we recently experienced in the area, and Johnson was supposed to have taken the vehicle to Cherry Street Automotive to be fixed today (Friday, Feb. 9.)

Huber received a call from Harrisburg, who advised that Cartmill had admitted to being n the vehicle and they were going to detain him. Crime scene techs were called to process the vehicle in Harrisburg, then it would be sent back to Carmi.

Then Harrisburg PD advised they were going to release Cartmill and issue him a summons for court, holding him until White County could come pick him up. White County went to pick up Cartmill, and he's facing vehicle theft charges in White.
