JEFFERSON CO., Ill. – A passenger in one of three vehicles involved in an interstate crash was the only person transported to an area hospital this afternoon.

Illinois State Police in District 13 DuQuoin worked the wreck, which happened at 4:21 p.m. today, Sunday, February 4.

ISP said that a 2002 GMC being driven by Joseph D. Smith, 46, of Herrin, was southbound on 57 at milepost 93 when he drove upon a separate property damage crash with an overturned camper in the roadway. Smith shifted to the left lane, striking a 2013 Peterbilt being driven by Charles L. Grumieaux, 54, of Sandwich, Ill.

Jonathan J. Goodman, 27, of Marion, had run his 2003 Pontiac off the left side of the roadway when he attempted to avoid the overturned camper. Grumieaux drove off the left side of the roadway and struck Goodman’s Pontiac.

A passenger in Smith’s vehicle, who remained unnamed in the report, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Smith was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash.
