FAYETTE CO., Ill. - A two-vehicle collision west of Vandalia sent a passenger from Smithboro to Fayette County Hospital earlier Tuesday, January 9.

Illinois State Police said the 4:39 p.m. collision happened on U.S. Route 40 a quarter mile east of Fayette County Road 1550 North, a mile west of Vandalia.

Preliminary investigative details indicate a 2008 Chevrolet being driven by Jonathan F. Sandifer, 45, from Greenville was traveling behind a 2001 Pontiac being driven by Norma E. Poole, 67, from Smithboro; with Poole was Jennifer K. Ulmer, 43, also of Smithboro.

As both vehicles were traveling east, the Chevy struck the rear of the Pontiac while on the roadway.

Ulmer was transported to Fayette County Hospital with unspecified injuries; Sandifer was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash and Operating Uninsured.
