Faux Fur Friday: How YOU can avoid striking a deer

Posted by on Friday, December 1st, 2017 @ 3:35 pm.

ISP DISTRICT 13 - Today is Faux Fur Friday. The deer are running crazy around Southern Illinois right now! Get your fake fur from a store, not a real fur with your car. Good luck to the legal hunters this weekend. Let's thin that herd!

Here are some tips to avoid striking deer:
* Try to not travel at dusk and dawn when deer are most active.
* If you have to, and where legal, travel with your bright lights on to help illuminate the roadway better.
* Put down your distractions! and focus on the drive.  You can't avoid it if you don't see it.

If it is too late and you see you are going to hit the deer, try not to swerve as this upsets the balance of the vehicle.  Keep the wheel straight, and brake as hard as traction will allow without sliding (for non-ABS equipped vehicles).

Fast Fact regarding insurance:  If you swerve and roll your vehicle after overcorrecting and don't hit the deer, your claim will be on the collision side of your policy.  There is generally much more damage to a rolled vehicle (read as totalled).  Your rates will go up as a result.  If you hit the deer, the claim will stay on the comprehensive side of your policy.  Your rates will remain the same due to this "act of God".

Also, if an Illinois resident hits a deer with their car, it perishes, and they want to claim the deer, give the Illinois Department of Transportation a heads up by reporting possession within 24 hours at www.dnr.illinois.gov or by calling 217-782-6431 no later than 4:30 PM the next business day.

To report a deer strike where the vehicle was NOT towed and there were NO injuries, contact the Illinois State Police non-emergency line at (618) 542-2171.  If there are injuries, call 911.
