PALESTINE, Ill. - An emotionally-upset driver admitted to running his vehicle into a tree early this morning, in an incident that prompted reports of gunfire from folks who heard the collision.

There was no gunfire, said Palestine Police Chief Jeff Besing, who explains the situation in a press release as follows:

The Palestine Police Department investigated a one vehicle accident at approx. 2:17am this morning (Wednesday, Oct. 11) in the 200 block of W. Grand Prairie Street.

According to Palestine Chief of Police Jeff Besing, he was notified by central dispatch of a vehicle hitting a tree and possible gunshots being fired at the scene. Upon arrival, Chief Besing found the driver of the vehicle (identified as Stephen D. Wilson, 24 of Palestine) laying on the roadway near a vehicle that had impacted a tree. Wilson was being attended to by a male and female subject.

Upon interviewing witnesses, it was confirmed that NO gunshots had been fired, that the sound of gunfire was either that of the vehicle impacting the tree or the airbags deploying within the vehicle.

Chief Besing interviewed the driver of the vehicle (Wilson) at  Crawford County Memorial Hospital where Wilson admitted to Chief Besing that he was emotionally upset and intentionally exceeded the posted speed limit and drove his vehicle into the tree. Wilson was not wearing his seat belt and received injuries which he was being treated for.

Wilson was issued traffic citations for Speeding over the Statutory Speed Limit, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and Failure to Wear a Seat Belt.

Assisting Chief Besing with this accident scene was the LaMotte Township Fire Department, United LifeCare EMS, Robinson Police Department and Crawford County Sheriff's Office.
