Traffic backed up on I-57

WILLIAMSON CO., Ill. - The accident that snarled traffic today on Interstate 57 claimed the life of a man from O'Fallon.

Illinois State Police said the wreck occurred at 10:14 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, October 10, in the northbound lanes of I-57 at milepost 47.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that traffic on I-57 northbound was backed up due to a construction project that began at milepost 48. Three vehicles were northbound at milepost 47: A Kenworth being driven by Jagpreet Singh, 27, of Lenexa, Kansas, was leading; a GMC being driven by Wayne S. Maxwell, 57, of O'Fallon followed; and a Freightliner being driven by Willie Lee Shelby, 62, of Madison, Mississippi.

The Kenworth and the GMC were slowed nearly to a stop for the backed up traffic. The Freightliner struck the rear of the GMC, shoving it into the rear of the Kenworth, causing fatal injuries to Maxwell. He was pronounced deceased on scene by Williamson County Coroner Burke.

Shelby was transported via ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries; Singh was uninjured, and his passenger, Sarbjit Singh, 32, also of Lenexa, Kansas, was uninjured.

All northbound traffic was diverted off of I-57 at exit 45 until approximately 2:45 p.m. when it resumed to normal flow. All three vehicles were towed from the scene due to damage.

Shelby was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash. Additional charges could be levied pending further investigation by ISP Crash Reconstruction Officers.
