JACKSON CO., Ill. - Just days after his father released what appeared to have been documents exonerating his son, Gaege Bethune has been indicted by a Jackson County grand jury in the death of Pravin Varughese.

Varughese, 19, died in mid-February 2014. His body was found on the east side of Carbondale, and authorities in the city and county went out of their way to make people believe that the SIU-C student died from exposure.

However, his family never gave up and continued pushing for the truth to be told, which was that Varughese's head was covered in bruises, indicating that he'd taken a beating prior to his death, and the beating may have lead to his death.

 Gaege Bethune

Bethune, son of an Eldorado-area man, Don Bethune, was the last person to see Varughese alive, and has since that time given conflicting and contradictory statements. We first published Bethune's connection to the case very early on, in mid-2014.

Don Bethune took to Facebook on July 5, posting this rambling set of materials declaring his son's innocence. This set of documents may or may not be genuine; there are a lot of spelling errors in the material, including those of Carbondale's detective, Brandon Weisenberger, whom we've known for years and used to work with. If a police department doesn't know how to spell their own detective's name correctly, they've got problems. Which is not to say that Carbondale doesn't...their effort, along with Jackson County Coroner Tom Kupferer's to obscure Varughese's actual cause of death, has literally given Carbondale and perhaps all of Jackson County a black eye.

We've not viewed the formal charges on Bethune yet, and don't know if he's in custody. But it's a good day for those who've lost loved ones in Carbondale, because this means someone is actually doing his or her job now...and Molly Young's case remains unresolved, so there's still hope for that.

Be watching for updates.
