STILL NO SIGN OF REPORTED DOWNED AIRCRAFT IN SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST

Posted by on Monday, August 10th, 2015 @ 4:16 pm.

HARDIN/POPE COs., Ill.–A reported aircraft gone down overnight in the hills and wooded areas of the Shawnee National Forest has a massive response going in search of it…but as of this afternoon, there’s no sign whatsoever.

The most we know about the situation stems from reports from agencies in Hardin and Pope counties, but the most telling is information coming from Marion County, Kentucky, where a small aircraft en route from their airport to Williamson County’s in Marion, Illinois, is reported missing.

The Crittenden Press has been reporting that the craft, with two aboard, entered heavy weather over the Herod area of Pope County (on the county line with Hardin) and our sources at the scene of a search effort in Pope this morning have advised that the pilot texted his wife back in Kentucky to let her know that.

That, reportedly, was the last communication anyone had with the craft.

The report we’re hearing in Pope is that the craft may have disappeared at about 2:30 this morning. Alerts were sent out at that time, asking people if they’d hard any low-flying aircraft in their vicinity to report it to local authorities. By 8 a.m. this morning, organized searches were underway in the often-treacherous terrain of the Shawnee National Forest in both counties.

We were at a press conference with Sheriff Jerry Suits of Pope a little earlier today and that vid is rendering; when we get it, we’ll post it.

In the meantime, the search continues. Anyone with any information is urged to contact their local authorities.
