GALLATIN CO., Ill.---A man is in custody today after an incident at the Dollar General Store in Shawneetown.

Keely Wright

Preliminary reports indicate that yesterday (Thursday, January 22, 2015) at approximately 2:30 p.m., former Gallatin County state's attorney Keely Dobbs-Wright and her new boyfriend, DeWayne E. Sharp from Old Shawneetown, were both taken into custody at the Dollar General in Shawneetown (CLARIFICATION: Ms. Wright wasn't in custody; she was just waiting in Chief Bob Boone's vehicle to see if her vehicle was going to be towed).

Sharp, who is reportedly currently on parole out of Kentucky, and Ms. Dobbs-Wright were apprehended while in the Dollar General Store when a loaded handgun owned by Wright that Sharp was carrying was observed in plain sight in Wright's vehicle.

It's being reported to us that store employees witnessed this situation with the handgun and called the police.

Not surprisingly, Illinois State Police, Gallatin County Sheriff's department and Shawneetown police departments all responded.

Sharp was taken into custody and is currently being held in the White County Detention Center.
We've put in a call to Gallatin County Sheriff Shannon Bradley regarding the whereabouts and freedom status of Ms. Wright and we hope to get a call back from him soon so we can update you on that.

QUICK UPDATE:

Shannon called us right back after we posted this. Ms. Wright is in no trouble. However, her boyfriend has really BEEN in trouble lo these past few years...including last month when he was shot in Brookport. That's right, DeWayne Sharp was the one that was the alleged victim in the shooting at a residence, said shooting which shut down the bridge over the river there, and so many are wondering, since he's on Kentucky parole, why the man was living in Brookport when he's supposed to not leave the state of Kentucky. Our sources indicated that Sharp was shot in the arm and in the ribcage, neither wound life-threatening. He was apparently recovering from these when he was served a warrant earlier this week in Gallatin County on some infraction there.
We'll have more as we get it; keep checking back.
