Myself, I am tired of the draconian gun laws that we in Southern Illinois have to contend with simply because the heathens of Chicago cannot behave theirselves. In 2009 there were more people murdered in Chicago than the number of our troops killed by hostile enemy action in Iraq according to an article that I read. How many murders have been committed in Lawrence County in the last 10 years? Less than 5 I do believe. So, why do we have to jump through all of the hoops intended to curb the gangsters from acquiring a firearm and ammo?
Why do we have to be governed by people who seldom venture outside of Chicago? I understand the top 7 politicians in Illinois government live within miles of each other in Chicago. Chicago isn't the capitol, Springfield is, and we need some equal representation at Springfield. These are not exact figures but are close, Illinois has nearly 13 million people in it. The Chicago area has roughly 9 million of those so the rest of the state amounts to around 4 million people. Do you really think that Chicago is paying more than 3/4 of the taxes in this state?
If you look at the Stimulus money, more than the lion's share went to Chicago, Cook County and the 6 counties surrounding the Greater Chicago area. Talk about sucking hind teat! While Southern Illinois is lucky to get our potholes filled, Chicago has several millions sitting in reserve to repair their expressways. People have been begging for a 4 lane highway between Lawrenceville and Salem for 40 years or more. Had that area had the clout Chicago does it would have had a 8 lane highway years ago and would have been repaved a half dozen times since.
I would like to see a comparison made between the school costs between Chicago and our region. Then see a comparison in the SAT scores. I read recently that Chicago high schoolers are reading at a 4th grade level. My nephew is 7 years old and reading at a 4th grade level already!
I have always heard about how many people are on Welfare in Southern Illinois but I have to say that while we appear to have quite a few, I feel that because they are so visible and familiar is why we get that impression. They have public Section 8 housing in Chicago that holds over 30,000 Welfare recipients per building! These areas make someone living in Sarajevo appear as safe as in their mother's arms. I have spoken with Cook County deputies that told me of 6 sheriff's deputies responding to ambulance calls in these housing projects, two to watch over the ambulance to make sure that it wasn't stripped of anything that could be stolen, 4 to accompany the ambulance attendants to see to the patient. The elevator couldn't be used because the tenants would pry open the doors and drop appliances down the shaft to kill the officers. They couldn't hold the hand railings because razor blades had been installed to injure the officers.
The cultures of Southern Illinois and Chicago are as different as daylight and dark. In Southern Illinois we are more akin to our rural cousins to the east, Kentuckians or to the west, South Missourians. We have been for years. We have been self-reliant and conservative. Not like the Chicago area people who live life as dictated by the Daley Democrat Political Machine. Granted that we do have our share of corrupt local politicians but these are allowed to thrive simply because the people know that the whole edifice is rotten and see no problem with allowing the locals to mimic the Chicago politicians.
I would welcome comments from anyone that can convince me with actual evidence that Southern Illinois would not be better without the Chicago millstone around our neck.
