Raymond Martin preliminary doesn’t go off in Jackson–AGAIN

JACKSON/GALLATIN COs.—Once again, Raymond Martin has let down all his ‘fans’ in southern Illinois.
The jailed Gallatin County sheriff, who’s still collecting his taxpayer-provided paycheck (to the tune of $40,440-plus annually, along with a $6,500 state stipend), was a no-show in Jackson County Circuit Court today.
Martin has been held at the Jackson County jail in Murphysboro as a federal detainee since last May, when he was charged with several federal guns and weapons charges. He is being held without bond on the fed charges.
Martin managed to get himself hemmed up again Jan. 2, 2010, when he was charged, along with his wife Kristina (Tina) and his son, Cody, with four counts of attempting to hire former fellow inmates to kill two witnesses in his federal case. Martin is being held on a million dollar bail on those charges.
Scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. preliminary hearing this morning, March 2, he was not a part of Jackson County jail detainees who were shuffled into the courthouse at about 9:05.
The detective who worked the local case, Mike Ryan told, Disclosure that Martin still didn’t have an attorney and it was likely that the prelim would be delayed from today as a result of that.
At his first scheduled prelim (Jan. 26, 2010), Martin appeared before judge Kim Dahlen and told her that he still didn’t have an attorney and did not want a public defender. He had previously told a judge, during a Jan. 5 first appearance, that he intended to get his own attorney. He told Dahlen on the 26th that he was attempting to secure funds to hire an attorney, and that while the feds had seized much of his property, be believed he had ‘found’ some more parcels that he might be able ostensibly to put up for bond.
Disclosure has been unable to substantiate the veracity of that claim; whatever the case, he doesn’t have an attorney and is still refusing to have one appointed to him. As a result, his 120-day speedy trial clock is suspended, the suspension attributed to him, until he finds an attorney or consents to have one appointed.
Disclosure has heard that he intends to keep delaying his Circuit Court prelim until after his federal trial, set to go off on April 12, during which he fully believes he will be exonerated “as soon as he’s able to tell his story from the stand.” Law enforcement officials have told Disclosure that Martin believes that he will be freed and able to vacation with his family to the Bahamas right after the April trial. If this is what he truly believes, he is probably delaying the state charges on purpose, and might, in his hubris, believe that such charges will be dismissed in light of his innocence on the fed charges.
When Jackson County prosecutor Mike Wepsiec emerged in the courthouse this morning to confirm that there will be no hearing for Martin, Disclosure commented to him that it’s too bad Jackson County couldn’t charge Martin room and board. Wepsiec laughed and said it’s further too bad there were no work farms to which they could send him, especially with gardens, as they’d “heard Martin was a pretty good horticulturalist.”
More on it as we get it; check back often. Print version in two weeks (March 17) will have it all.

How long will they let this go on? At some point will they appoint him an attorney? This is ridiculous! By the way, I love your use of the word hubris again! It is my new favorite word!
He’s playing the system like a fine tuned fiddle!Until they find him guilty of something he can contune to recieve his check for being Sheriff.
Any word on them rescheduling Raymonds court appearance?
Not yet…we’re looking at that. we’ll put it up when we find out.
He’s been moved to May 3. Tina’s and Cody’s are both May 5.
At least we won’t have a pending birth hanging over our heads for the next set of Martin prelim/hearings!!
How long can he put it off by not hiring an atty.?
I haven’t had that question answered yet. If the delay is attributed to the defendant, I’m guessing it could go on indefinitely, since he’s the one ‘suffering’ by having to sit in county custody. We get the impression that he believes he knows how the system works and he’s going to work it to his advantage…
I just saw on Daily Register that he just got hit with NEW federal charges. Have you heard anything?
regarding the new federal charges, I wonder if Kristina and Cody will also face federal charges?
Also, has anybody heard anything about Jeremy Potts getting arrested for meth last week?
If Tina and Cody were charged with Federal charges would they be arrested and held again?
Jeremy Potts showed up at a bar in Gallatin Co Saturday night with a hellacious black eye and an even more painful looking girlfriend. I’m pretty sure he’d never been there before and not sure why they were there that night. They didn’t know anyone, but just stood there groping each other, with obviously no idea what planet they were on. At one point, his “girlfriend” took her cigarette and put it up to his eye like she was going to burn him, (and almost did) and then she just made a kissy-face at him. (Or tried to make a kissy-face. The meth-twitch in her jaw probably made it hard.) It was crazy and disgusting! Finally, trying to scare them off, someone went up to him and said “You may not know anyone in here, but people in here know you, so watch your back.” and him and his creature hit the door. HAHA! I had no idea who they were until they left. I heard someone say: “You know who that was don’t you? That was that Jeremy Potts guy!!”
Or they were working.Drug Task Force has a woman with them to.And she is good at acting.Very good!
top cat:
this was no drug task force lady and no acting. this was not the first time they had been in this gallatin county bar by no means. sorry galco
but they have been spotted there before. the two of them came in one afternoon possible 4 months after raymondo’s bust to have a drink. a local didn’t recognize either of them so they were deep in conversation while i am soooo eaves dropping since i knew who they were. the local asked jeremy his name and the little punk had the nerve to say “there’s more than one jeremey potts out there” lmao… yeah right dude. come on? who did you think you were fooling. needless to say they were on an aleged drug run that day selling narcotics.
Has anyone noticed that all the charges are coming from outside Gallatin County. I havent heard anything about charges from the county where this all happened. I know the state’s atty there isn’t a hardass by any means but why isnt somebody from there going after him. The thought just occured to me that maybe the “it” people in Gallatin that are connected are keeping their hands off Raymond so he doesn’t talk on them, or maybe Raymond is keeping quiet so nothing happens to his family. You know it is all like that movie “Mississippi Burning” over there. They don’t like outsiders. I mean look at the way they won’t talk to the Disclosure.
