WEATHERMAN POPPED FOR ERRATIC DRIVING, CITED WITH DUI
TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—A popular TV personality in Indiana has been busted following a traffic stop in Terre Haute, Indiana, earlier today.
While most news reports on it are vague—understandably, as the man in question, Kevin Orpurt, works for WTHI-TV in Terre Haute—it appears that police observed Orpurt, who is a weatherman, driving erratically on Poplar Street (ostensibly in Terre Haute) and pulled him over…but only after he allegedly failed to stop when signaled to do so by the officers in question.
When police assessed the situation they discovered what they initially believed to be a drunken Orpurt operating the car, and they cited him as such.
Later on, he was officially charged with fleeing police, and operating while intoxicated. He was housed in the Vigo County Jail, where he sat until he was “medically cleared” to be released (translation: dried out a little bit.)
Turns out he WASN’T intoxicated on alcohol, but was impaired allegedly on a controlled substance. Reports aren’t indicating what that substance was. His official charge was, therefore, operating a vehicle on a controlled substance, and of course the fleeing and eluding.
Orpurt, of Terre Haute, is the Storm Team 10 (WTHI) meteorologist. He’s been with channel 10 since 1982 and has been chief meteorologist since 1985. Orpurt also produces print articles about weather for local newspapers, and is a frequent guest speaker at schools and public events.
He will be facing a judge on Monday on the charges.
