EMA Coordinator having a little problem at the pumps….

LAWRENCE CO.—This pic just made our day.

This was snapped yesterday, September 26, at Casey’s in Lawrenceville, where Lawrence County’s Emergency Management Services coordinator, Jess Angle, was having a little trouble at the gas pumps while trying to fill up his….er, the county’s, expensive gas-guzzling vehicle Jess drives all over creation in his oh-so-important job.

Surely he’s not too dumb to use the county’s credit card…..

One of two things was happening: either Angle is too dumb to know how to use the pay-at-the-pump feature, or the county’s credit card had been maxed out. Either way, he was having some trouble; we don’t know if they got it all worked out or not.

We did an expose` on Angle’s county credit card usage nearly three years ago, this after his position with the county was sealed under contract. In all our coverage area, we aren’t aware of any other EMA director/coordinator that has a position under CONTRACT; it’s just an appointed position, done so by the county board, and is “at will and direction” of the county board and can change any time. But not Jess, no no no no. He’s under contract. Charlie Gillespie, former board chairman, saw to that before he left his seat in 2010. This came after nearly 1,000 county residents signed a petition in 2008 demanding Angle’s resignation following his disastrous response—which reflected in the agency he directs, and nearly resulted in drowning deaths—after the massive 2008 flood swept the Lawrence-Allison prairie.

What do you think…should EMA directors be under contract, or are we overthinking this? Or is it just a problem with Angle and several pathetic members of the Lawrence County board (who, by the way, are going to remain there at least another two years by default, as no one’s running against them in november)?

  1. I would be really interested in how many time his operation has been audited since he has been there.
The county board had me audited 6 times in my 4 year term. They did discover that one time I put money that I recieved for housing Richland County prisoners back into the Sheriff’s Department account when it was supposed to go into the General Fund so the board could spend it as they pleased.
I admitted that was a mistake for foolishly thinking that the department that earned the funds should have them returned to them so more improvements could be made to their department.
Jess will have that job as long as he wants it. Many holding political office fear him because he has a small army of followers (some in influential positions because of Jess) that will campaign against anyone who opposes Jess on anything.
