Power out after trucker allegedly texted, then wrecked

The wrecked truck in question, post-wreck, of course.

SALINE CO.—A semi truck loaded with coal overturned on Raleigh Road about a mile from Eldorado early this morning, and the reason, according to the Saline County sheriff’s department, was one of those that the rest of us fear.

Alan Fleming, 32, of Zeigler, was eastbound on Raleigh Road when his semi, hauling a load of coal, ran off the roadway on the right side, rolled, and in rolling, crashed into two power poles. The entire load of coal was spilled; the truck landed on the driver’s side, all of this just before 1:30 a.m. this morning, 07.20.12.

The power was out in the Eldorado and Raleigh areas, according to our readers, for several hours on and off, finally being restored completely this morning but only after sunup (about 7 a.m.)

MedForce Ambulance transported Fleming to Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado, but his injuries were serious enough to warrant transport to Deaconess in Evansville.

This, however, did not preclude Fleming from being cited for Texting While Driving, as well as Improper Lane Usage.

The highway was shut down to traffic, including all coal hauling from American Coal, until everything could be cleaned up. ISP District 19 was at the scene, and was assisted at by the Saline County Sheriff’s Department, Eldorado Police and Fire Departments, and Ameren.

  1. What ever happened to the Coal Haul Trucker that rear ended the car at the Old Shawneetown turn off a year or so ago.

  2. Don’t know what they did to the driver but the husband of one of the ladies that got killed did get a settlement as her three chrildren did.

  3. In fact this wreck happened in one of her Sons front yard this morning.

  4. I have all but quit riding my Harley because of the many “near misses” I have experienced over the last 5 years. Each and every one of them caused by people yakking on their cell phones.
I have had a M/C endorsement on my driver’s license since 1973 and have ridden well over 100,000 on motorcycles but it has been only in the last 5 or more years that I have noticed a dramatic increase of cell phone users swerving into on-coming traffic, disregarding stop signs, yield signs, and staying in their own lane. I am amazed that there are not actually more accidents due to cell phones and texting.

    • dennis the problem is that people think because its ok for cops to talk and text while driving. Then why isnt it ok for everyone else and i have been told this by an officer here in lawrence county lol and i will admit that i am guilty of talking while driving if im in town but if im on the highway i stop as for texting i always make my passenger reply :)
