So…we’re wondering where the Marion water department gal went

MARION—It would appear there’s something afoot with money from the water department in the city of Marion.

About $40,000 of it.

.......

While we don’t have many details, we have confirmed that a certain long-time water employee, Linda Heyde, is no longer at the Marion water department.

Heyde, reported to us as being “very politically connected,” was reportedly fired this past Friday, May 11, for what’s being called “theft of more than $40,000 in public monies from the city of Marion water department.”

We’ve received communication that “e-mail from the city tells department heads ‘NO STATEMENT is to be made about anything you know at city hall’.”

Phone calls placed to the water department by our staff have confirmed that Heyde is not available; quote, “She’s not here” with no further explanation given.

When we know more, we’ll bring it….in the meantime, keep watching.

  1. I have an idea. Why not hiring people by their qualifications such as intelligence, integrity, honesty, and work ethic instead of their political connections?
Maybe there wouldn’t be so many thefts of the people’s money if this was the practice.

    • That would be too easy. These people who hire and maintain those in positions of power have to work at finding someone who’ll ultimately screw up and provide more people who have positions of power with something to DO. Like cops, prosecutors, judges, correctional officers, probation officers and all their staff….you get the picture.

  2. Thanks for covering something in Marion.

Big surprise.I bet the shredders are running overtime at city hall. All it would take is an enterprising investigator to uncover the ongoing culture of corruption going back decades. Maybe if Garnati or Madigan puts the squeeze on Heyde we can get an inside look.

Bob Owens was looking in the right direction during his tenure , and this accounts for the holy hell he received from the mayor.

Here’s hoping, but I’m not holding my breath…

  3. …$40K missing?…maybe she’s in the Bahama’s 8)

  4. simple question: Are you a public servant? when they answer yes: As my servant I demand you answer the questions or resign for refusing to serve the public’s right to know!

  5. They are so afraid of being investigated. Always have been. If the Marion/Williamson government where ever to be truly scrutinized I dare say there would be many who would go to prison.

  6. Linda is a long time employee and a very good person that made some bad choices. Praying for her and her family.

  7. If memory serves, one of the other candidates for mayor last year called for an independent forensic audit of the city’s finances going back 40 years. That’s what is needed here, but it will never happen under the current Administration..

  8. In today’s SI, Butler said there would be an independent audit. That’s a step in the right direction, IF they do it.I’d like to see WHO the city contracts with to do the audit as there are generations of incestuous political relationships in Marion/Williamson county. We shall see…

  9. Isn’t Butler a de-frocked attorney?

  10. As a matter of fact (at least according to ARDC) yes he is.

    Name: Robert Lee Butler
Date of Admission: June 4, 1952
    Address: 201 S. Market St.
    Marion, IL 62959-2515
    Phone: (618) 993-6465
Status: Not authorized to practice law due to discipline and has not demonstrated required MCLE compliance

  11. Seems this is getting to be a common read around the area..personally I think there should be unannounced audits to find where our tax dollars are going … there is so much political incest anymore would be difficult to locate everyone involved..we kinda focus on one person taking the fall anyway..and the real culprits just keep on keepin on…almost generational..control from the grave as they say ..they learned well.. 8)

    • That’s a brilliant assessment of it, marguerite. The unannounced audits, however, would have to entail the powers-that-be being uncorrupt enough to hire an outside auditor who wouldn’t “spin” the results or conveniently “overlook” one fund or another…..we need decent people to run for office, then get in…..not people like Bob Butler who was never decent to begin with, staying in office for almost half a century. Marion is full of corruption…I’m sure it would absolutely give people heart attacks if they knew how deep it went.

  12. [...] aware of the water department debacles that have hit towns in southern Illinois…such as Linda Heyde in Marion, or what’s going on with Harrisburg’s audit, or even the gal in Carrier Mills that took [...]
