Martin Van Buren, our 8th president, once remarked, “The less government interferes with private pursuits, the better for general prosperity.” Those words were no truer when they were spoken than they are today. It is time for government to get out of the way and let us do our jobs. In that spirit, here is a list of five simple things government and ‘we the people’ can do to put our country back on the path to prosperity.

1. Sales Tax Holiday. Suspending the state sales tax would immediately boost consumer spending. A sales tax holiday puts money directly into the hands of consumers and does it in a way that requires that they spend money to save money. According to the Peoria Journal Star, when Illinois suspended the state sales tax on basic school supplies for two weeks last August, consumers spent $323 million and saved $16 million. This year, citing the state government’s inability to stop its out of control spending, Governor Quinn cancelled a repeat of the holiday.

Sales taxes hurt low income families and, ideally, should be dramatically reduced or eliminated altogether. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a 6 percent sales tax amounts to roughly a 1 percent income tax rate for families in the highest income brackets, a 3 percent tax on middle-income families and a 4.5 percent tax on the poorest families. That is because, generally, wealthier families spend only one-sixth of their income on items that are subject to sales taxes, while low-income families spend three-quarters of their income on taxable purchases. Suspending the sales tax on food, clothing, and other essential items would bring much needed relief to consumers.

2. Payroll Tax Holiday. Employees are one of the first things businesses cut when times get tough because they represent such a high percentage of the cost of doing business. Payroll taxes add to these costs and make employers think twice before hiring. One thing the Federal government got right last year was to grant a 2 percent reduction in payroll taxes via the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, however, that does not go far enough. Since the majority of new job growth is generated by businesses that are less than five years old, it has been suggested that all payroll taxes be suspended for new businesses. George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom, has proposed giving a payroll tax holiday for the first ten jobs businesses create in that country. If similar proposals were enacted here, it would encourage new businesses to hire more employees than they would have otherwise.

3. Buy Locally. If you are serious about seeing the economy recover, spend your dollars at locally owned stores instead of national retailers. Every dollar you spend contributes to the revitalization of the community. According to a 2002 study by Civic Economics, spending $100 at a chain bookstore generated $13 in local economic activity, while spending the same amount at a locally owned bookstore generated $45 in local economic activity. A more recent study, conducted in Michigan in 2008, found dramatic advantages in locally owned pharmacies, grocery stores, and restaurants over similar national chains. They found that just a 10 percent market shift to locally owned businesses in one county in Michigan could create 1,614 jobs and $53.3 million in additional wages. This is because local stores pay higher wages, spend more money in the community, and keep their profits in town.

4. Repeal Blue Laws. In these tough times, the government should do all it can to encourage entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, state and local governments continue to restrict economic activity through restrictions called blue laws. Blue laws were widely passed in the 1800s and were designed to enforce religious standards, particularly the observance of Sunday as a day of worship or rest. Blue laws still exist in many municipalities throughout Illinois in the form of alcohol sales restrictions and prohibitions on horse racing and car sales on Sundays. These laws should be repealed immediately so that those who wish to conduct business or make purchases on Sundays can to do so without restriction or penalty. Business owners—not the government—should decide whether or not they honor the Sabbath.

5. Demolish Excess Housing. Prices are largely driven by the laws of supply and demand, and those laws caught up to us with a vengeance during the housing bubble of the past decade. Prior to 2006, housing prices were artificially inflated and construction companies built millions of housing units during the boom. Eventually, however, the bubble burst and many of these homes were left abandoned. The exodus from inner cities to the suburbs added to the excess of empty houses. All these empty houses are now creating a strain on the market—driving down prices at an alarming rate. In order to balance out supply and demand, excess housing should be bulldozed, especially in the inner cities where abandoned properties have become a magnet for crime. This will create jobs for construction workers and allow developers to come up with new uses for that land.

  2. Old Fart says:

If the government would do what it was originally designed to do we wouldn’t be in this mess. The government of this nation wasn’t intended to have so many departments that they don’t know their ass from a whole in the ground. It wasn’t created to interfere with all levels of business nor the housing market. Somehow though through enough whine-bags and crooked politicians…Al Gore, Bill and Hillary Clinton and the present El Presidente Obama we have had a radical movement to shrug off new business and make the little guy feel the heat of new rules and regulations. Meanwhile we have companies on Wall St that are “too big to fail” and somehow our government feels inclined to help these crooked bastards. Go file a false insurance claim and see what happens to you! I guarantee you won’t be like the CEO’s of these same companies that got millions of dollars in severance after their leadership ripped off the companies they were heading and led them to bankruptcy and some even to closure. The government wouldn’t adequately help the citizens in the Gulf after hurricane katrina ravaged the area but yet they want to help out these companies ranging from automakers to banks to insurance giants. Sorry folks but our government has its nose in to many things right now and I even feel like we should be engaged in less military exercises than we currently are. We should be interested in protecting this nation and its borders and get our men and women home to do so. We always have been able to guard our nation from right here and thats where we should have our military now. Kinda hard to guard the henhouse when you aren’t even on the farm! I am sure some may disagree with certain parts of what I have said but study history and social studies a little you will see most of what I am saying is very true and accurate.

Good call, You’re On It Old Fart.

      • Old Fart says:

Well I hope I said that without making the military folks mad at me. I am grateful for the sacrifices they have all made with their time and even their lives. The fact remains our government has put its nose in to many places it simply does not belong.

    • rantingrich says:

Hey I gotta hand it to ya rich you may have caused a lot of friction but I sure wish you culd tell me the secret to getting out of all the crap they put you thru…I have a feelin I’m gonna be gunned down before long by someone who holds a badge but shuldnt!

  3. rantingrich says:

Well for one Get a lawyer.. any lawyer NOT from here! They are on the Prosecutor payroll IN SPADES Last time I did what I was accused of Flat out! I did bad! This time somebody lied and they and them have deep pockets and they are gunna pay for my retirement. Also it helps to have a maniacal, out of control prosecutor who’s personal hatred for you will make him wreck his own case and break the law trying to add your head to his trophy wall!

    • Old Fart says:

Ya it also helps when you have a prosecutor who has violated more federal laws than even you know by heart, then even tho he gets ya a conviction and sends ya to prison, he was to stoopid to kno all I would have time to do was plan my vengeance which was reporting him for all his wrong doings and well guess what? That azz wipe is workin for the bank now but not before he was clearly threatened with criminal action! The feds ran one out and they need to come back and run the current one out too!

  4. Old Fart says:

If anyone on here knows someone abusing workers compensation benefits I have a connection to help you in reporting them. Kinda funny seeing someone claim they have back trouble or some other ailment that prevents them from working yet they can get around just fine when no one is looking. If anyone knows someone like that and they are abusing the system feel free to shoot me an email at oldiusfartius@gmail.com and I can certainly help you find a remedy for the situation!

  5. Russell NY says:

…here’s a recommendation that will put some folks to work and solve a couple other problems at the same time…first, with all the floods and hurricanes, there seems to be a need to reinforce levies in low lying coastal areas as well as throughout the national flood plain…in order to do this you’re gonna need a butt load of fill dirt… this fill dirt can be readily obtained by digging out a huge moat all along the US borders with Mexico and Canada…then you can add all those overpopulated alligators from the southern states to the moat(s)…seems like that would create plenty of jobs for construction workers, equipment operators, truckers, civil engineers, hunters, homeland security, etc., while at the same time greatly discouraging illegal immigration… :choler:

    • Dennis J. Bridwell says:

I am looking for a job that consists of sitting out beside a BBQ pit and telling jokes. You reckon the gubmit can find me a job like that?

      • Old Fart says:

The closest they might have is an aid to the presidents kitchen or a door greeter at walmart. I am not sure it will be exactly what you are looking for but hey we cant have a 100% guarantee when it pertains to gubment matters ya know! ;)

  6. rantingrich says:

If anyone paid any attention in History Class you will recall that the people that made headlines were for the most part PRIVATE ENTERPRISE types! NOT POLITICIANS! Ford, Morgan, take your pic. Captains of industry, risk takers, scientists, ect! NOW for you to be all over a papers front page you either a useless self indulged celebrity or a traitorous pig of a politician.

    • Old Fart says:

Hey Rich did you pay attention in class? I was always to poor to pay attention…I even made the front page a few times but when I get those that put me on the front page in the paper themselves they get angry, but again I have to say I am even to poor to pay attention to them, the naysayers group lol! Goodnight gotta go to beddy bye
