Bank robbery attempt in Equality
EQUALITY—Vandals/wannabe bank robbers reportedly attempted to break into the Legence Bank in Equality last night.
Our Equality sources are telling us that bank employees arrived this morning to find damage done to the back door of the facility. This damage appeared to be done with a large object; at least, it appeared as though the would-be robbers tried to batter the door in, it was pretty badly beaten according to those who have seen it. However, access wasn’t gained, so nothing inside was lost.
There’s been no indication as to how authorities know this happened at about 1 a.m. this morning, but that’s what our sources are being told.
And, either the would-be robbers—or worse, someone else—also went after some heavy equipment: a backhoe or bobcat bucket is missing; that reportedly belonged to Gerald Brown, who is the contractor putting in the town’s new water mains.
The bank break-in attempt is the third such in the past couple of decades. The first time was about 17 or 18 years ago; the second time was about 15 years ago. A man was charged in that second incident: Jeff Haynes, who is reportedly still in DOC for that crime.
Legend has it that none other than Jerome “Onion” Patton was the perpetrator of the first incident, but that’s never been proven, so for right now, that remains rumor, while Onion is still on line for his most recent run-in with the law over pot and weapons charges.
That’s all we know; if anyone else has any input, feel free to post it here.

No arrest will be made .The FBI don’t care about it,the Local Cops are not interested in createing more work. They got a FREEBIE this time.
I think they try again or at least keep stealing.
If they plan to continue they better get some bigger tools or work on cheaper places to steal from as the banks doors are tougher than whatever they was using. Heck it would be embarrassing to be caught tryin to break in to a bank. LOL! Just think these would be thieves could get just as much prison time as someone who actually broke into the bank…I would at least like to think I got some cash for my loss of freedom. CAN’T FIX STUPID!
We hear Tony Lloyd was stationed to watch the bank all day until the REAL cops (ISP) could come along…..la la la….borrrrrring job.
Give me a box of dixie creams and a cup of java and I would watch it!
I’m still laughing. I wonder what Tony thought of that? Better yet, I wonder what Legence Bank thought of that? Only in southern Illinois…right?
Did it really take all day for the State Police to arrive? No wonder they picked that Bank.
It seeems the State Police wasn’t to interested inthe break in either.
Hard to disagree with that statement. Around here with the exception of a few, the state police mostly just want the seatbelt tickets or they want to go after a bust that makes em famous. Most of them could care less whether they bust all crime and if its a small town forget it, they just come and write seat belt tickets. Can’t say this is what’s goin on down there but it sure looks like it. I have been told several times there isn’t anyone in my area from the ISP and that it would be an hour or so before anyone would arrive…they sure don’t have this problem when doing a roadblock or some other exercise they want to do, as fourteen or more can be seen at one time!
It appears they only feel safe when they are in large numbers.
They can be quite a little bunch of chickensh!ts can’t they?
#1 Tony is BS,#2 If they had gained enterance how would they get to the money?#3 Why would anyone try to break into a bank that has little or nothing to go to prison for?,,,LOL
There is nothing in a bank worth going to prison for. If anyone with half a brain was thinking there would be no crime
They didnt break in so whats the hurry.Seen a ISP,CSI in harrisburg but he was headed down 45 south That day.
The first time it was robbed the robber went down the Saline river in a boat. The second time police were placed all along the Saline looking for a boat,Evan Ridgway and all sorronding PDs were called in.County,State and FBI were called in.But this was just damage to the back door.
It could have been a drunk that left the legion and was mad at the bank.LOL
