2011 Flood: Levee breach in Lawrence CountyPosted by Jack Howser on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 @ 8:42 am.
LAWRENCE CO.—The levee where the Embarrass and Wabash Rivers meet in southeastern Lawrence County has been reported breached as of 8 a.m. this morning. There are two breaks on the Cross levee, and authorities are worried that the middle section between the two breaks are going to go.
The levee was overtopping for quite some time and sandbaggers attempted to hold it; however, they reported at 8 a.m. that it was definitely breached and floodwater was pouring into much the same floodplain as the June 2008 flood: across much of the prairie and into Westport.
The flooding is expected to roll right up to the Memorial Bridge between Westport and Vincennes.
Old business 50 is closed going into Vincennes; portions of 33 are closed, we believe in the Russellville area, but we’re still waiting on precise locations. We understand that the water isn’t going to reach up to the business area where KIng’s Furniture is located, so in this aspect, it’s not as bad as the 2008 flood.
