Don’t ask/Don’t tell ‘repeal’ ISN’T
NOTE: If you are offended by openly conservative views about homosexuality being something a person should keep to him-/herself, DO NOT READ THIS! This will likely piss you off to no end.
Gays in the military: It isn’t a question of whether they’re there; it isn’t a question of whether they’ve always been there and nothing can change that. What it IS a question of is whether they SHOULD be there, and what the morale is of those heteros in the military who become aware that gays are serving side-by-side with them and what that does to the psyche of the straight soldier/sailor/airman/marine.
Until Bill Clintoon’s administration, it was a given that the military didn’t want homosexuals serving. Period. Removal from the service was the result of gay behavior, men or women. And that’s what this is ultimately about—behavior.
Then, ol Bill decided it was uncool to make a person promise they weren’t gay/wouldn’t be gay, and established “Don’t ask/Don’t tell,” meaning that gays wouldn’t be questioned about their sexuality, up to and including removal from the service, and in turn gays would just kinda keep it to themselves.
Now, “Don’t ask/Don’t tell” is in the process of being repealed. And not removed back to pre-1990s, wherein gays would no longer be permitted in the military. It’s being removed altogether, if this socialist president has his way.
So our question tonight is this: is it okay for gays to be openly gay in the ranks of the military? What does that do to the servicemen and women and their ability to follow through with their sworn duty?
The above portrayal is supposedly a portrayal of the kind of comradely behavior amongst soldiers of many decades ago; those soldiers likely felt comfortable doing such things because back then, gays weren’t supposed to be in the military. It’s currently estimated that 5 -6 percent of the American population is gay (and here we use ‘gay’ as a designation for male and female; we don’t care about the current distinction between the two in today’s lexicon). If 5 percent of the above guys are gay, that’s a really slim margin. So WHY is a big deal being made of this issue?
It’s because to people in combat readiness and mission preparation, that 94-95 percent heteros don’t need anything else to worry about…and unfortunately, being in constant close proximity to a gay person is ‘something else.’ It undermines the security of missions that are high-stress or mentally and emotionally draining, like combat. I’ve been there; I know. ‘Don’t ask/Don’t tell’ undermined that in some way, because there was no longer the possibility of expelling for inappropriate behavior, as it was ‘okay’ for gays to serve as long as they didn’t flaunt it. Now, apparently, they’re wanting to flaunt it. And if you think a lot of high-quality servicemen and women have gotten out of the service over the past several years due to this and other such changes, wait and see what happens if it becomes okay for openly-gay people to not keep it to themselves.
It’s not an issue of ‘tolerance.’ It’s an issue of behavior. Our military is doing everything it can to maintain what it has in the face of constant cutbacks, Base Realignment and Closure (Clintoon did a fine job screwing with THAT too) and too many tours back to back. It doesn’t need anything else undermining it. And contrary to what ‘statistics’ are showing, most military people—those who see it as a career, who take it seriously—don’t want openly homosexual people serving alongside them…because of the behavior, and because of the morale issue of the 94 percent.
So…what do you think? Weigh in. Just because we are opposed to gays in the military at all doesn’t mean your voice can’t be heard; what are the arguments? Post away; I gotta step away from the computer for a bit and I’ll check back.

Dennis, I’m not surprised.
BTW, my girlfriend goes in usually at 6pm (she works at Carbondale Memorial) so if we can eat before that, we can go about any evening.
Ok sounds great! I’m still in the walker & home-bound for maybe another week or two, but after that, I should be able to get out & about better. My hubby works Mon-Thurs(we have a shared apt in Vincennecs for his time up there but I usually don’t travel & stay up there due to my knees but from Thurs-Sunday, anytime would work for us. So, Ang & I will get it set up and we’ll go from there.
I look forward to meeting all of you! Good-night Dennis…sweet-dreams.
your girlfriends name is Sally, right?
Yes, you can see our picture in an older issue of Disclosure when we were at the Tea Party Rally in Harrisburg.
Dennis, that’s ok. I just wanted to make sure that was her name. I’ll recognize Ang when we all go out to eat. So, my husband & I are looking forward to it. TTYL…
ambu_u_2 if ppl werent so small minded it would not offend them with gay pride parade,a parade is a parade,if they r offended then stay home!!!:p
Well Red if the gay pride paraders weren’t so small minded then they would understand why they offend others.
As far as “staying home”, would you have the same opinion if it was a anti-gay parade?
A few months ago there were a series of photos taken at a San Francisco Gay Pride parade which showed many people in various stages of undress in public, painted in gaudy colors, men performing fellatio on each other and fondling each other’s organs. This is taking place in a public place and because of the political correctness in today’s society, it was allowed to go on.
There is a saying “Tolerance is the last virtue of a dying society” and if the people of this country are forced to be tolerant of this sort of disgusting behavior, I can see why our country is in a nosedive.
I will be happy to be classified as “small-minded” if that means that I do not feel that public displays of perverted behavior are “normal”. What will be permitted next, Beastiality?
Nah, Dennis…what’s next is lowering the age of consent.
So people like Todd Fort will never be brought up on charges. Oh, and that Raymond Brindley guy. All he would have to do is say “You know, I just couldn’t help myself; that 10-year-old was so HOT.”
@Dennis, I’m with you on this one. Someone sent me a video of a bunch of gays painted up in disguise on bicycles, mind you, and they were all naked as jay-birds, riding down the street all painted up. I thought I’d be sick just looking at it. There’s got to be a limit as to how far they can go. I wouldn’t want to expose my children or grandchildren to that kind of behavior. I doubt anyone in their right mind would.
Dennis, you are 100% right when you say “public” displays of that kind of perverted behavior is not “normal”! I think there are a great many of us on here who agree that we don’t care what they do behind closed doors but when they want to rub our noses in it, then that’s when they’re going overboard. When they’re allowed to do things such as that, they’re just going to fight for more & try to get every right they can possible and cry out, “DISCRIMINATION”, when things do not go exactly like they want. Don’t you think they’ll keep pushing for more & more? I do!!
Dennis,i think we should respect ourselfs and those around us,and i also think they have the right to push for the same rights you or i have, and no i dont think you are small minded, i think you are a very educated man who certainly looks at the whole picture, thanks for that!! :p
just for the record i am not gay!!i am mother to 5 and Nana to 10, :p
Red….. Sometimes it seems like they have more rights than the rest of us. If they don’t get the job or promtion they want, all of a sudden it is discrimination. If someone kicks their ass it is a hate crime. If that same persom attacks me it’s just battery. They can have sex with anybody they want to as long as both sides are consenting and of age. They can marry someone of the opposite sex, same as I can. Exactly what rights do I have that they don’t have?
they should have the same rights as us, there are all kinds of discrimination, hate crimes, out there, its not just the gays, they are Americans just like the rest of us and should have the same rights as the rest of us,just because they are gay does not make us superior to them, :p
@RED: Hate crimes = thought crimes.
People either commit a crime or they don’t commit a crime. What they’re thinking when they commit it should have no bearing. We go into hate crimes and we’re all screwed, because then we come under scrutiny for what we THINK. that’s wrongwrongwrong.
I have 2kids in the military and 1 in civil service(military job)…. In my fairly limited experience they don’t give a shxt, could care less and just wish the issue would go away… They have way more to worry about. They are in there doing a JOB not talking about family and what not, or atleast that’s what I’m told. This has to do with when they are OFF DUTY, leave personal lives personal!
that’s my 2cents worth
The state of mind of the accused is at issue in most crimes. Any crime that involves intent necessarily delves into “what they’re thinking when they commit it.”
Mens rea (“guilty mind”) is a required element of all crimes that aren’t classified as strict liability.
To be convicted of theft, for example, the state has to prove that the defendant not only took something, but did it with the specific intent to permanently deprive its rightful owner of its use, which obviously involves what the defendant was thinking when he committed the crime.
I’m not saying I disagree with you about hate crimes, necessarily, but I don’t think that’s the best argument to use.
‘Intent’ shows deliberation. A person can take steps toward the commission of the crime, acting toward the crime, as opposed to acting in the heat of the moment (see Randall McMahon).
The consideration of whether or not a person is gay (or of a particular color, ethnicity, religious persuasion, legal status, etc) is VERY subjective; unless the suspect said “Yeah I beat the shit out of dude because he’s a queer,” that’s a whole lot different than “I beat the shit out of dude because he turned around and squeezed my crotch.”
What I’m saying is that just because the guy beat someone up because he “doesn’t like queers” shouldn’t be a heavier case over the fact that dude was beaten. It’s either a crime or it’s not. If this ‘hate crime’ BS doesn’t stop, pretty soon people are going to be charged for “thinking” a certain way, even though they didn’t act, because that’s the way our legislation and legislators always go.
RED, I understand what you’re saying..to an extent. I brought this up here awhile back though. What about people(men & women) who have been together long enough to be considered what falls under “Common Law Marriages”? They do not get the benefits of those who are married do, as far as health insurance. I don’t think that’s right at all. The company my brother-in-law worked for is based out of California, so before he & his wife were married, they qualified for health insurance on her as if they were married because they were “companions” who were dwelling in the same house as a couple. Wouldn’t you think the same should apply to people who are in “Common Law Marriages” as what the gay people are fighting for? And, if I’m not mistaken, it is the same with the military. A couple must be married in order to get the benefits, even if they have children together. The children can be covered but unless there is a legal marriage, the companion is not covered. I’ll do a little more checking into that because my son-in-law is in the military, unless someone answers or corrects me before I get to talk to him. Just sayin…if they’re going to make exceptions for gay people, they should also make exceptions for ALL AMERICANS EQUALLY. Please remember, I have friends who are gay, both male & female and I’m not homophobic in the least little bit….
I would think that the fact McMahon showed up with a gun and shot the guy from behind would be all of the intent that would need to be shown.
@goneforgood: but they’ll break it down even further: that he took the weapon from wherever he kept it (because we’re not a concealed carry state, you know), he loaded it (because unless he’s on his own property, he needs to keep the ammo separate from the weapon, because we’re not a concealed carry state, you know), he traveled to where Ritchey was with the weapon at the ready (can’t do that, because we’re not a concealed carry state, you know) and then they’ll probably tag him for stepping out of his car with the weapon (they’ve already specified that he shot toward an occupied vehicle, breaking it down at least that far).
Looks like we’re going to the prelim, so we’ll have a full report on how they break it down.
@S&S, I don’t know about the military, but I do know that illegitimate children are or can be covered under social security and I think maybe the workmen’s compensation act too (in the event of the death of a parent). Also, I do know if a man and woman live together and aren’t married and they have a checking account together that establishes when the relationship began (roughly) and that they shared living expenses, etc… then there is what’s called Palimony in Illinois. I personally know a guy that had to pay his ex-girlfriend Palimony for a couple of years until she could get on her feet.
Where a lot of this got screwed up was when “marriage” became a legal term instead of a “relationship” term. Marriage should have remained a religious or relationship term. In legalese, it should have been a different term such as civil union, for the purpose of benefits, etc. Every marriage would have been a civil union, but not every civil union would have been a marriage.
goneforgood, do you by chance, remember when or why marriage became a “legal” union rather than a “civil” union? I was doing some research about 4-5 years ago(trying to put another wrinkle in my brain by learning something..lol)when I came across something that lead in that direction. If I remember correctly, it was either in the latter 1700 or 1800′s or maybe before then and there was a couple wanting to get married and they were of different races. In order to be able to become husband & wife, they needed permission from the courts and had to get a license to do so. The courts seen this as a way to have more “income”, therefore, making everyone who wanted the civil union as husband & wife, purchase a “marriage license”. I really can’t even remember what I was researching at the time which ended up leading to that, dog gone it. But back to my original question, do you remember when or why they started making it a “legal” union rather than a “civil” union? I’m being very serious here too because I can’t remember. Guess I could look it up but…
I really have no idea. Sorry.
Angela…. I believe you are wrong about keeping ammo seperate from the weapon. The location of the ammo is not regulated as long as it is not actually in the gun. You can have a loaded magazine in the case right next to the gun and as long as it is not in the gun it is perfectly legal.
I guess it depends on which ISP trooper you’re talking to on that day…. :/
That’s okay. No biggie..It’s just usually when something like that gets on my mind, I obsess about it & I’m too tired to obsess today & too lazy to look it up..
HHANNAH, The social security I knew about but not the workman’s comp act. The palimony I was kinda iffy on. Do they have to have resided in the civil union of man & woman(couple) for a certain period of time or do they establish it based on when they start the joint checking account or other assets they may start together?
http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm Is it legal to have ammunition in the case with the firearm?
Yes, so long as the firearm is unloaded and properly enclosed in a case. I keep the printed version of this in my gun case. It goes even further and states that the location of ammunition, including that in loaded magazines is not restricted. I’m sure that there are some troopers around that would argue with the brochure but they would be wrong.
I know here at home, we keep the gun in its original case with the magazine in its proper place in the case. There is always one in the chamber ready to go. When we travel, we make sure there is no bullet in the chamber, but have the magazine full & the extra one full as well to pop out the empty one & pop the new one in. We have had to use it on critters around here…not human critters or pests though!
S&S…..Just don’t get caught on the road in Illinois with the loaded mag in the gun. They get a little pissy.
I know they can be. We usually carry it like that on River trips. You would be AMAZED at the weirdos that come up to ya out of nowhere. We were going to stay at one marina for the night on our way to Chattanooga, Tn. a few years ago. We had never stayed at that marina before and according to the River Map, it was a four anchor marina. We pulled up to gas up & get a covered slip for the night..well, right in front of this marina & us was a boat that I swear to the good Lord above, looked like a freaking pirate boat! Then, out came 3 guys from below, that literally gave me the hibbie-jibbies! My husband came out from paying for the gas, slip for the night & ice…before he could even board, I told him, “No way in hell was I going to stay there”. Not just because of the boat or people aboard it, but because the place was sooo run down compared to what it looked like in the book. He had to go back in & get our money back for the slip. We drove a lil further away and found a nice lil cove to stay in for the night, which I would rather do ANYTIME over staying at a marina. My main worry is out on the water, not the highways or interstates.
@S&S..sorry I’m late getting back…company and phone…I don’t really know what would have to considered legally to establish a palimony case, I just know of the one and that couple was indeed together for quite a while, sharing a joint bank account together. I laughed when I first heard about it until the old boy told me out of his own mouth that he was indeed paying his ex-girlfriend Palimony.
By the way, how big is your boat anyway?
HHANNAH, hey lady! It’s a 34ft..not a huge one but a nice size for 2-3 cpls to take a trip in with comfort for all. Guess what? I got my staples out today….all 20 of them! YAAAAAHHH! Makes it a lot more comfy now!
AWWWWWW, we have the rating system now!!! Sheesh, now, I must be on my best behavior!
I wondered why it was sooo slow earlier & kept timing out? ALRIGHT, Ang & Jack…way to go!!!!
Somebody, anybody, rate this, please? I wanna see how it works! Too kewl…I think…
Ang & Jack, this is awesome! Thank you sooo much… :aie:
Now if we could get a counter on the posts like on the cell phone version.
@CMHS: I don’t even know what I did. I just was scrolling through the features on “ratings” and found that, so I enabled it. It might have been a plug-in our tech dude put on. Whatever the case, I can’t see it from the admin side and I have no idea what you’re talking about for cell phones, lol….
@S&S…really happy for you that all those stitches were removed…that helps, I know. Good for you, gal.
34 ft you say? You’re right, just a nice size. At least you don’t have to worry about the Asian Carp jumping in your boat with you. That’s a plus.
HHANNAH, they were staples & it feels so much better having them out. I asked to keep them as a reminder of what is to come with the next one..the worse knee..lol.
As far as the Asian Carp, I lure them to the boat & we start the engines just to get em to jump but, no they can’t jump inside the boat..Thank God! I’ve tried my best to catch them with a rod, but can’t find the right bait yet. I won’t give up til I catch one though, one way or tuther..
I mentioned it several months ago. On the mobile version we can see a counter that tells how many comments are on each article. It is really handy to tell if there are any new posts on the story without having to open it and read. As it is now if we miss more than ten posts we have to run through every story if we don’t want to miss anything.(and I try to read every single post) I do like the new feature also.
@CMHS: Ah….I do have that on the admin side. Your post was #233 of DA/DT.
Soooo…I will do some searching tomorrow and see what I can find on settings for phone apps. What kind of phone do you have? That makes a difference, I think (Chris will prolly get on here and chastise me somehow…this is his bailwick….)
This is one of the most polarizing issues in America. And personally it should be “Dont ask Dont tell”. but our country is evolving. for better or worse.
I don’t know if you have any control over the color of the print on the new “like” feature but if you do it would be nice if you could change it. It is light blue on gray and very hard to see when you hit the symbol for most popular content on the right.
HTC hero with Android software…..and thanks
People will also say that our society will falter. ?????Guess what all major powers always fall from within. So guess what folks lets protect ours. We are a great power.
I agree with CMHS, it is very hard to see the light blue on the gray background.
S&S and CMHS: the color settings are up to IT guy. He’s out of town til next week. We tried to address it before…I’ll make a note and see if we can get to it.
@S&S…I agree…but then I’m one of those either ALL BLACK or ALL WHITE kind of persons…no GRAY area.
HHANNAH, LOL..No wonder I like you so much. The rating system popped on last P.M. after replying to you at 7:27. It actually took a minute or so for my comment to you to post & when it did, Vwal-lah, we had the rating system. Unfortunately, for people like us who either like it black or white, with no gray shaded area, will never have our way because almost everything in life is shaded gray & not black or white. Even the simple things that should have no gray area, have developed over time not to be just black or white! That’s where our country is in a definite nosedive & downfall when the simply things are no longer simple. That’s just my opinion though.. :o:
Ang, When I go to rate, it is clear enough that I can click on it to see if I want to re-read something. I’ll see if I can darken my screen to help a little on my side. Thank you! And Great Job! I know people had been asking for the rating system for awhile now. We ask & you take care of it if it is within your ability. You’re a hellava lot better than our gubment and definitely more persistent with everything!! Kudos to YOU & Jack..

Dammit Dennis, that is hilarious! Although your insensitive nature has offended idiots like Mealy and Miller and all the other faggots around that read on here. Probably offended some Juggahoes and Juggasluts too tho.
I wish that I could take credit for that, it would be one to be proud of.
I wish that I could take credit for that, it would be one to be proud of.
DAMN, Dennis!!! For a second there we thought YOU had written that….we thought there would be a hidden talent there~!
Too many post to read them all ,,, But I say KEEP YOUR FAGGGGOT ASS OUT, AND STAY OUT..
