Bad accident Saturday night in northeast Wabash County
WABASH CO.—Sheriff Joe Keeling reports that on Sat. Sept. 4th at approx. 8:58 PM the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Carmel Police Department, Mt. Carmel Fire Department, Allendale Fire Department and Wabash General Ambulance Service responded to a two-car accident on E 1200 Rd (Bridgeport Blacktop) and N 1690 Blvd.
Daniel D. Butler, 31, of Lawrenceville, was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee north on N 1690 when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with E 1200 Rd.
Butler collided with a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country minivan that was being driven south on E 1200 Road by Jeffery A. Carlson, 49, of Mt. Carmel. With him were his two children, 2-year-old Jaxon D. Carlson and 3-year-old Jozie M. Carlson and their mother, Bethany A. Jones, 27.
The Jeep Butler was driving struck the Carlson vehicle on the passenger side front door where Jones was sitting, totaling both vehicles.
The impact knocked both vehicles off the road into the ditch on the north side of E 1200 Rd.
Jones recieved serious injuries and was taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., by Air Evac.
Jeffrey Carlson was taken to Wabash General by WGAS for his head injuries. The two children were taken to WGH to be checked out for “by the Grace of God” bumps and bruises.
All the passengers in the Carlson vehicle were properly restrained. Butler was not wearing a seat belt. Butler was taken to Deaconess Hospotal by Life Flight. The Jeep Butler was driving was reportedly stolen from Mt Carmel.
Butler was cited for Driving While Suspended, Disobeying a Traffic Control Device and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
(FYI from Keeling: I checked on Jones, she was in serious condition but stable. She needs our prayers………..)
(Admin note: Keeling’s a good sheriff. He sends these press releases and adds these little notes at the end. Everyonekeep Bethany in your thoughts. We’ll have more on the whole thing about the stolen Jeep in the print version, on stands in a week.)

The info states that Butler was driving north on N 1690 when he failed to stop.
I’m definitely not an expert on Wabash County roads but I believe N1690 is an east/west road. He was either going east or west on N1690 or north on E1200. Usually “N” roads are east/west and “E” roads are north/south. If E1200 is the B’port blacktop then I know it runs north/south from B’port to Route 1.
Either way I hope that family comes through.
You know, I thought that too. We’re out there all the time; I thought it didn’t sound right.
But I’m hesitant to correct Joey’s press release…for all I know, the guy, who was running around in an (allegedly) stolen Jeep WAS actually northbound on an east/west road…From what we understand, he had JUST (allegedly) stolen the vehicle from CVS in Mt. C., and was driving like a maniac.
I’ll have Ang call Joey in a bit and see if this was just a basic mistake.
We are keeping Bethany in our thoughts and prayers…Joey said he was amazed that those kids were in the same wreck, they were running around afterwards like there was nothing in the world wrong with em. Angels watching over them, no doubt.
What a nut. One would think that the intelligent (intelligent, lol) thing to do after stealing a vehicle would be to obey every traffic law to the letter. Not “drive-it-like-you-stole-it”.
“Woohoo, look at me. I just stole this thing and now I’m going to see how quick I can draw attention.”
If you do some investigating you will find that Danny Butler has past legal problems all over the county And had NO business driving in the first place.
Thanks Brian…Joey said the same thing…we’re waiting on the Wabash charges before proceeding, but this is a stinking MESS.
We are also here at the hospital with my brother & have became friends with Bethanys parents, she is improving but has a long road ahead of her. we need to keep her and her family in prayers.I understand he was also drinking at the bar with a friend and he wanted to leave and his friend didnt so he left walking and then stole the car from a cvs… :p
