Terrible motorcycle accident outside Old Shawneetown
GALLATIN CO.—Here’s a press release we received regarding an awful accident we were made aware of today when we were in Shawneetown:
Illinois State Police (ISP/ District 19 Carmi) released information concerning a traffic crash, which occurred in Gallatin County, 08/09/10, at approximately 11:22 a.m.. According to Illinois State Police District 19, Troopers investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash which occurred on Route 13, approximately 1/10 of a mile west of the Shawneetown Bridge (Ohio River).
The preliminary traffic crash investigation indicated that the driver of the 1999 Honda motorcycle, Dennis D. Smith, age 49, of Old Shawneetown, Illinios, was traveling west on Route 13, when he drove into the east bound lane of travel. The motorcycle struck the front of a tank trailer that was being pulled by a 2009 Peterbuilt truck tractor. The driver of the 2009 Peterbuilt was identified as Ryan S. Walker, age 25, of Henderson, Kentucky.
Mr. Smith was flown by Air Evac to St. Mary’s Hospital for the treatment of his injuries. Mr. Walker received a citation for no hazardous material endorsement on his commercial drivers license. Mr. Smith’s citations are pending investigation.
C & T Towing, Shawneetown, Illinois, removed the vehicle from the crash scene.

We wanted to add something: we were in the circuit clerk’s office when the deputy clerks were talking about this accident. According to one of the girls, this motorcycle rider was an uncle of her husband. According to what she was hearing, the motorcycle rider lost his leg at the scene. Unfortunately, her husband apparently was on the EMS/fire/rescue squad and either came upon the scene or was about to when she called him and warned him that it was his relative out there. It was a pretty sad and tense situation for the ladies in the office. We hope Mr. Smith makes a full recovery; we didn’t know how he was faring at all until we just received this presser.

Is there anything new on his condition?
how awful. i wonder why he crossed that line. The road is always a factor. the slightest bump can send you way the wrong way. lots of prayers for the family. Thank you for posting at all. I couldnt find it on the DR or on news 3 website either.
You’re welcome. We were right there but didn’t go get photos because of the seriousness of the situation; we just didn’t want to photograph something that would upset someone. We hear there was a Good Samaritan that came along. We’ll be featuring that in the print version Aug. 25 if we can.
That motorcycle accident involving the Shawneetown man DID make the DR in the 8-10 edition of the newspaper, page 7A. In fact, it was a good informative article. I believe in giving credit where credit is due.
