BEWARE: ISP holding fundraiser in Hamilton County July 1

HAMILTON CO.—It’s not exactly a porkburger cookout…but plenty of people believe it involves a form of pork.

Illinois State Police has announced there will be a ‘Roadside Safety Check’ on July 1 in Hamilton County. “Officers working these details will be watchful for drivers who are operating unsafe vehicles, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or driving under the influence,” this according to a press release this afternoon.

ISP uses as their excuse for doing this that they’re “zero-tolerant” of drunk drivers. However, why they have to have a designated place and date in order to nab all those drunk drivers, especially in little old Hamilton County, on a workday, is rather odd in the scheme of things, especially since no interstate runs through HamCo, only state highways…and that just barely.

Of course, ISP was careful to note that they’re able to fund this “detail” because of a grant (YOUR TAX DOLLARS), which might pay for the overtime involved if there is any, or all the additional manpower they’re going to need in order to take in the DUIers they’re going to grab off the side roads (or hey, main streets, as in McLeansboro) of lightly-populated HamCo.

And also of course, your tax dollars ALREADY fund ISP, so you’re getting double-dipped. And if you’re caught in one of these details not wearing your seatbelt (which, we were promised back in the 90s, wouldn’t be an offense ISP would be stopping us for…but they sure do), you’ll be triple-dipped. As with most everything law-enforcement-related in Illinois, this kind of ‘detail’ is merely a fundraiser for ISP, in order to ensure that they’re getting enough money out of the residents of this state (and others passing through) to justify writing for grants, which they obtain in order to do this kind of thing, so they can go out and write tickets again, etc., etc., etc.

They used to call these “dragnets.” A cop would argue that that’s for something specific. But this is a general dragnet, where they’re looking to get anybody and everybody they can, for ANYTHING they can. It’s a gitchafer. Never mind that you have the Constitutional right to not be detained if you haven’t done anything wrong. You’re going to be detained at these ‘details’…so be prepared, maybe send word out. God knows everybody knows how to text while driving these days. Hell, text US where the “detail” is, and we’ll put it here on the site, the Facebook page and of course Twitter. Call it “Narc that Cop.”

One of these RSCs was scheduled to be held in Saline County today, so Salinites, if you’re reading this, be aware that this is going on in your neck of the woods.

And HamCo-ites, be on the lookout for the non-porkburger-fundraiser coming to your county July 1, courtesy the Illinois State Police.

it’s an inconvenience that we should put up with if it stops just one drunk driver. a family member of mine was killed by a drunk, he got 7 years, even though it was his 6th dui. that’s what should get everyone steamed, not having to wait a few minutes. his mother would wait forever if it would bring back her son.

    may be true?

Truthteller, the point admin is trying to make is, why are they doing it during the week, why are they telling where and when?
Their job is to PATROL HIGHWAYS. If they did their job a lot more dui’s would be issued, but that would cause them to actually go out and “work”. They would rather violate your constitutional right and detain you for no specific reason.
Ill bet you any amount now they get 0 duis, maybe a few seatbelts and DL violation, and if someone goes thru there knowing they haven’t got it on or don’t have a seatbelt, well dunbass you deserve it.
If the ISP patrolled like they should, they wouldnt be sitting in ridgway at the PD after midight watching tv and drinking coke. sometimes there’s 3-4 isp cars there.
Now thats a valuable taxpayer asset isnt it? sitting in ridgway with the high crime they have!
im not an ISP hater, just hate paying taxes for bullshit like that

    • Couldn’t have said it better!

Everywhere we go, every county (except Lawrence) if we’re out late, we see ISP cars at the local cop shops. And it’s not just District 19; we see it in 12, we see it in 22. We rarely see ISP on the highways unless there’s something unusual going on (we’ll hear it on the scanner). They’re just not out there anymore. They’re in the middle of Fairfield; they’re in Mt. Carmel; hell, they’re in friggin Allendale…but they’re not often out on the highways. We don’t know what they’re doing. We saw THREE ISP squads in the middle of Albion last week! It wasn’t lunchtime, they weren’t at the courthouse to testify, and there was nothing going on the scanner. Then there was the one that almost hit us head-on over by Barnhill, probably because he was on the phone.

I know they’d rather be out fighting real crime…but wow. And then we get this…which is a grant…for a taxpayer-supported entity…to give us tickets to pay fines and fees on top of the egregious taxes. It’s got to STOP somewhere!!

it doesn’t make sense to me either. the point i was making is if it stops one drunk, good. if you’re running legal, then relax. honestly, in your whole life, how many minutes have you waited at a roadblock. for the average person, i would assume less than a couple of trips thru the drive-up at mcdonalds.

    • Mmm…actually, we got stopped at one in Murphysboro when Ang was still researching her tornado book. We were just up the street from our hotel. But it took TWENTY MINUTES to get through the block, and Ang had to pee. She threatened to get out and walk; I told her she’d get in trouble for leaving the car when there was a line backed up like that. So that kinda sticks in our heads. Or at least, hers.

I wasn’t meaning to diss your point, truthteller. Please don’t take it that way. We’re just tired of things getting more and more invasive and intrusive into our lives, all in the name of the almighty dollar and the police state.

  5. DNR will be at all the poplar lakes through the 4th of July looking for drunks driveing boats,Drugs and anything else that people have fun at.

one isp was on a manhunt in gallatin co thursday looking for a guy that had a “disagreement” with his sister, which has been an ongoing thing their whole lives.
anyway the trooper was all over the S-town area looking for this guy who apparently was on a backhoe! and they couldnt find him. radars boys were in the town cars out in the county on the hunt to.
doesnt this seem like it should be handled by county? instead we has a city cop and a HIGHWAY PATROLMAN all over the radio and then deciding they needed to have an arrest warrant issued!
its a joke, but im so glad i can work 60 hours a week to make sure they have grant money to check seatbelts in ham-county

Of course we live in a police state. Think you own your home? Quit paying taxes on it and see how long it takes for the government to take it away from you. Let’s hope it doesn’t get any worse.

Question! Last two times I have entered McLeansboro, there are anywhere from 3-4, maybe 5 ISP at the intersection setting. (trucks they say) I have seen maybe two trucks checked. Why dont they use what is already there? (and no, this wasnt in a weeks time either…several months)

  9. jx3

its all the high crime in mcleansboro, and the traffic flow. geesh dont you know that!!!!

i think everyone that can should just keep circling thru the roadblock wednesday, do you think they would get flusterd if about 50-60 of the same cars and trucks kept going thru turning around up the road and coming back?
its our money, make them earn it

  10. galcounty

jx3-Who were they looking for in Gallatin county? Was the person on a backhoe at work the whole time they were looking?

  11. ambu_u2

If you REALLY want to have fun at a roadblock, when they start the 20 questions, where you going, been etc. Just polity tell the officer “Sorry I dont wish to discuss my affairs” 8)

  12. jx3

im not sure what he was doing. but ill leave the name out for now.
if you live there you can probably figure it out by just thinking what brother has a nut case sister (both in their 60′s)
and they argue all the time

they need to come to norris city & catch some drunks, drug heads & speeders. we have a big problem with speeding in town. Speed limit is 25mph part of town, like on west main. They go 50 to 80mph all the time. the city is afraid to give tickets or something? they do nothing at all. and you cant get the state to do anything. we though about getting a petion signed, but don’t know if it would do anygood or not. its pretty sad when you cant get the city to do something. like put stop signs up at every road. They woud run them. Its very hard to back out on road. I have been almost hit pulling in and out of my driveway.
