TOP TEN MOST CENSORED STORIES OF 2009
We’re working on a different kind of “top ten” (or top whatever) list for year’s end than what other media does.
Four years ago we produced a special edition devoted specifically to the “most censored” stories of 2005. We ended up with 14 or 15.
We’re not going to do a print version of that this year, but we’re looking to make a big ol post about that very thing here on the website, and put it up one day this week.
So what do you think are the least covered stories–by mainstream media, anyway, and which we covered to a pretty good degree–of 2009?
Send your suggestions. Regular readers will know what we covered and what other media didn’t. An example would be June Bailey’s helping himself to FEMA trailers in Berry Township (Wayne Co.) For whatever reason, Wayne County’s own media only gave that a glancing bit of coverage (we understand it’s because a Berry Twp official works at the press). Nevertheless, no one bothered except us. That’s the kind of thing we’re talking about covering in this post.
If it becomes big enough, maybe we’ll give it a few column inches in the next print version (on stands Jan. 11-13). That’s particularly the Primary Election edition, with all kind of coverage on that, but we’re always looking for stuff to fill it up to almost 32 pages…at which time we have to dump the mundane stuff and make it 28 because we can’t fit that many papers in the Jeep (still with that problem. It remains unresolved.)
So send em in, posted in the ‘comments’ portion after this post, and we’ll put em together.

I would say any story about Jess Angle and Dean Kelly since the local Lawrence County papers do nothing but showered them with praise.
Anything regarding Max Schauf and/or his spawn.
Jade Winstead, this girl was murdered right in her doorway, I truly believe that this one had to be witnessed and for some reason it has hit a block wall.
We concur with that. Was the investigation going on this year, or wasn’t it dropped last year? We have written about it, but not extensively.
Also, do you think her brother’s car accident was really an accident?
I have just recently became aware of your newspaper and have fallen in love with it. Its the most truthful thing in southern illinois! Is there anyway you could give me some links to read up on this Jade Winstead and brother? Never even heard of it! thank you!
Now that we’re looking at it, I believe her name was Jade Winston. We don’t have anything on this site about her, the only material we ever produced was in the print version, about a month after her death.
What we’re thinking of doing is collecting up some more information about it and going forward with some stuff in the print version in upcoming months now that we’re covering Saline a little more thoroughly. When we get that, we’ll let the online readers know that we’re covering it that way, with one of the “This month’s print headlines” posts. That way you can know to pick up a copy and read about it. Hopefully we can gather more info on it than what the local mainstream media had.
We’re willing to talk to anyone about her, btw. Hit the link on the front page here for our email addy and drop us a line. We’re in Saline about once a week now, so maybe we can meet up.
Let me speak with a few of the family members and friends and see how they feel,as i know for sure that a few others will be glad to assist any way they can
