Looks like it's a go for Raymond Martin, Gallatin County sheriff, to kick off his federal trial April 12. According to court documents signed today by U.S. Magistrate Philip M. Frazier, Martin is still on track to have his federal drugs/weapons/conspiracy/witness tampering trial start Monday, April 12, at 9 a.m. before Judge Gilbert in Benton.

Gallatin County sheriff Raymond Martin at January's Jackson County hearing. We didn't get to see him Tuesday but apparently it never ends for the guy...  | read this item
It looks like there'll be no vakay for RayRay. Jailed Gallatin County sheriff Raymond Martin has just been the subject of the federal grand jury in Benton (again), and the grand jury has handed down superceding indictments to add to the ever-growing list of offenses federal authorities believe Martin committed since late 2008.

We were told at about 3 p.m. (02.24.10) that a coach/teacher at Gallatin County schools, Steve Vinyard, was escorted out of the schools by Scott Sauls, and someone was seen toting some boxes from the building at the same time.

Infamous Harrisburg certified public accountant David Cox, who has most recently been spending his free time in the courtrooms of Gallatin and Saline counties offering testimony for his various friends and enemies, is now potentially finding himself the object of a court matter the he, as a numbers man, had to see coming.

Mike, left, and Ricky Chekevdia. Doesn't that boy look happy to be with his dad? Or maybe it's just a reaction to dad's hand placement.  | read this item
As if we didn't need another reason to be reminded that at-large Second Judicial Circuit judge Melissa Drew is only a judge because she's not Brian Shinkle, she gave us a big reason yesterday (02.19.10): she ordered custody of Ricky Chekevdia, 7, to be handed over to his father, accused child molester Mike Chekevdia.

The jailed Gallatin County sheriff, who's still collecting his taxpayer-provided paycheck (to the tune of $40,440-plus annually, along with a $6,500 state stipend), was a no-show in Jackson County Circuit Court today.

Anybody from Wayne County will know that in certain parts of the county, you can't get away from bad roads...that's because there are certain parts of the county that probably shouldn't have roads.

We wanted to give you a kind of heads-up as to what you can expect for the next issue coming out of south counties, and get your input on some of the articles on which we're still gathering information. This is because you readers are the key to having the most comprehensive presentation of what's going on in your area. We take your input and compare it to official information; it often helps us with "leads" into other aspects of investigation that we might not have otherwise considered.

A public body can't just call a closed meeting or executive session willy-nilly. And yet that is what some in southern Illinois are doing on a regular basis.

After what seemed like an interminable wait while the investigation was going on, there have finally been ten people charged in Edwards County with providing the alcohol that lead to a fatal crash last October at the old Casebier Farms corner in south Pond Creek (the White County portion north of Burnt Prairie).
